Sophisticated and detailed interior decor contributes to the hotel’s high-end ambiance. Penasquitos Canyon Preserve is a convincing stand-in for a citadel. And its location within the green sloping walls of Los That the hotel’s palatial peach-colored building - surrounded by palm and cypress trees, patios and garden fountains - belongs to some prince or aristocrat in an undisclosed Mediterranean oasis. Once vacation brain sets in, it’s easy to imagine The architecture, inspired by Addison Mizner’s Spanish-Mediterranean buildings in South Florida, is what attracted me to the property in the first place. Nonetheless, the facilities are nothing to sneeze at. Weighs service three times more than other standards, I knew that staffers would be at the top of their game. Fairmont Grand Del Mar recently received FTG Five-Star ratings for Addison, the hotel and its spa, a trifecta achieved by only 12 other properties in the world. Credit: 2018 Fairmont Grand Del Marīefore my arrival, I was prepared to encounter superlative staff. So, although the quality of what was available was 5 stars, the limited menu drops this a star, especially since this is in a hotel where one would expect diners to probably want to eat here more than once. The hotel’s architecture was inspired by Addison Mizner’s work in Florida. Personally, I think a $55 steak should come with vegetables. But if you want some broccoli, green beans, or spinach you are out of luck. There are some vegetable starters, like the Persian cucumbers, salad, or carrots. The entrees do not come with a vegetable, nor is there a list of side dishes to order separately. This is the opposite of the kind of restaurant where you look at the menu and say "I need to come back, there are so many things I want to try!" The costs for a dinner here are about $100 per person with a drink, starter and dessert.Īs for the menu selections, they are quite limited. The staff were great they were friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. it is the main restaurant for the hotel and is not open for lunch for some reason it should be. We ate breakfast here once, and dinner twice during our stay and the food was uniformly great. We ate at Amaya on two previous visits to the Grand Del Mar, and I can certainly say that the quality of the food is dramatically improved. We have reservations for their Michelin star rated rates restaurant today, and I certainly hope it will be a better experience. For the price point, I would NOT recommend unless you have no other food options. Server was sweet, but many of my aforementioned concerns were out of his control. Recommended dishes: tuna appetizer, lobster salad and steak. Also, it did not contain the mushrooms and fava bean purée as listed on the menu - I presume they ran out and subsidiaries with some pickled veggies. My halibut was warm, but not hot as I would have expected. We were so tired and hungry, we just made due with his bitter knife to avoid further delays and get to our hotel room for sleep. The food: they ran out of steak knives for my husband. Plus, from the inside, the restaurant only looked 1/4-1/3 full with lots of staff, so inside how the high staffing ratio did not equate to more prompt service. We were only a party of 2 and so hungry after our long journey to the hotel. The service was incredibly slow, 30 mins for appetizer and 40 mins for entree. a dress and heels as I did, as it is uncomfortable to scoot in and out. I recommend regular table and chairs if you have. I was disappointed they had no outside seating, but we were placed an a massive half moon booth which made it terribly difficult to maneuver in and out. We had reservations, but those are not necessary.
